A suspect arrested in connection with a stabbing at Edmonton's Nanaksar Gurdwara Gursikh Temple was released from federal prison on Thursday, one day before the violent incident occurred. Two worshippers were injured in the early Friday morning attack.
The Edmonton Police Service responded to the temple on Aug. 21, 2026, shortly after 5:00 a. m. following reports of a disturbance. Upon arrival, officers found that a man had entered the prayer area and confronted staff. The situation escalated, resulting in two men, aged 51 and 75, being stabbed. Both victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and received medical attention.
The suspect, a 27-year-old man known to police for a history of violent offences, was detained by members of the gurdwara and subsequently arrested. Police have stated that the suspect had been serving a sentence for aggravated assault and assaulting a peace officer. He had reportedly failed to report to his designated halfway house after his release.
The Edmonton Police Service's Hate Crimes Unit has been engaged as investigators work to determine if the incident was motivated by hate. The World Sikh Organization of Canada has expressed deep concern, noting a rise in anti-Sikh sentiment and incidents in Alberta and across Canada. This includes recent threatening calls made to gurdwaras in Calgary and a reported assault on a Sikh truck driver in Edmonton earlier in August.
