Newfoundland flight diversion sparks amusement over "freezing island" label

Newfoundlanders are reacting with humour to international media reports describing the province as a "freezing Canadian island" after a British Airways flight was diverted to St. John's last week. The flight, en route to Houston from London, was forced to land due to a medical emergency on Tuesday, March 31st.

The diversion led to approximately 255 passengers being grounded in St. John's for about two days, further compounded by a subsequent storm. While the unexpected delay was undoubtedly challenging for travellers, the "freezing island" depiction in outlets like People Magazine has been met with playful responses from residents.

Heather McKinnon, general manager at the Delta Hotel in St. John's, acknowledged the difficulties faced by passengers but hopes people recognize Newfoundland and Labrador as more than just a frozen wasteland. Some Delta staff even used their own vehicles to assist passengers with essential shopping. A video parodying the headline has also gained traction on Reddit, depicting the stranded passengers in a humorous light.

This isn't the first time Newfoundland has served as an unexpected stopover for international flights. In September 2025, a flight bound for Europe was diverted to Gander due to an unruly passenger. Similarly, a Lufthansa flight was diverted to St. John's because of a pilot being incapacitated. Despite the challenges of being temporarily stranded, the people of Newfoundland and Labrador are known for their hospitality and resilience.
