Toronto police are investigating a suspected arson that occurred early Thursday morning, damaging multiple vehicles at the residence of Scarborough Centre—Don Valley East Liberal MP Salma Zahid. The fire, which occurred around 1:20 a. m. in the area of Bellamy Road North and Lawrence Avenue East, resulted in three vehicles being damaged. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
MP Zahid confirmed that her car and a neighbour's vehicle were set on fire. She stated that her son alerted her to the blaze, and neighbours also called 911. Zahid expressed gratitude to the first responders and neighbours, emphasizing that her family is safe. "Such attacks are unacceptable and will not deter me from my work serving Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East," Zahid said in a statement.
Prime Minister Mark Carney denounced the incident as a "cowardly act of violence and intimidation." He added, "It is unacceptable. It is not who we are as Canadians. I'm relieved Salma and her family are safe." The Toronto Police Service is continuing its investigation into the matter and is seeking any information from the public. The motive behind the incident remains unknown.
