South and central Saskatchewan were walloped by extreme weather this past Sunday, August 30, 2026, with a tornado confirmed near Kelso. Environment Canada issued red-level tornado warnings for areas including Kelso, Wapella, Kenosee Lake, and Whitewood, as well as near Alameda, Oxbow, and Glen Ewen. A tornado warning was also issued for the Wilmar area. These alerts were part of a broader pattern of severe thunderstorms that swept across the province, bringing heavy rainfall and large hail, with reports of golf ball-sized hail near Estevan.
The intense weather system, driven by a strong low-pressure system and cold front, caused significant disruptions. In Regina, underpasses at Albert Street and Saskatchewan Drive, as well as Broad Street and Dewdney Avenue, experienced flooding due to the heavy rainfall Sunday morning. Regina Police advised motorists to avoid these areas, with Albert Street and Broad Street closed to traffic at these intersections. Environment Canada warned that up to 100 millimetres of rain could fall over Sunday and Monday in the affected regions.
Meteorologists noted that the severe weather was part of a line of storms progressing eastward towards the Manitoba border. While tornado warnings were in effect, Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Chris Stammer indicated that by Sunday afternoon, some of the more critical tornado threats had moved east, with wind and rain becoming the primary concerns for many areas. However, the potential for severe weather, including strong wind gusts and continued rainfall, was expected to persist into Monday for parts of Saskatchewan.
