Eastern Ontario Battles Wildfire Smoke with Air Quality Warning

Share:

Much of eastern Ontario is under an air quality advisory Saturday afternoon as smoke from wildfires in the northwest of the province drifts into the region. Environment Canada has issued warnings, noting concerns for both air quality and visibility.

The smoke has led to a noticeable haze, with air quality index levels reaching a moderate to high risk in affected areas. Environment Canada recommends limiting outdoor activities, particularly for vulnerable populations such as seniors, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. They advise closing windows and doors to maintain indoor air quality and using air filtration systems if available. For those who must be outdoors, wearing a respirator-type mask, such as an N95, is suggested to reduce exposure to fine particles.

Health advisories indicate that exposure to wildfire smoke can cause mild symptoms like eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, or a mild cough. More severe symptoms, though less common, could include wheezing or chest pains. Residents experiencing severe symptoms are urged to seek medical attention.

Looking ahead, Environment Canada anticipates a significant improvement in air quality on Sunday. However, conditions on Saturday may fluctuate, with periods of worsening and improving air quality throughout the day. The persistent wildfire situation in northern Ontario remains a key factor in these ongoing air quality concerns across the province.
