Canada's immigration system is showing signs of improved efficiency, with recent updates from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) revealing shorter processing times for several temporary residence applications. As of mid-June 2026, applicants for work permits and visitor visas are experiencing notable reductions in wait times, a trend that began to emerge in early June.
Work permit applications submitted from within Canada have seen a significant decrease, falling by more than two weeks in the most recent reporting period. This improvement follows a general trend of reduced wait times for work permits originating from countries like India and Nigeria, which have also experienced one-week decreases. For applicants in the United States, work permit processing times have also shortened, now averaging four weeks.
Visitor visa applicants from select countries, including India and the Philippines, are also benefiting from modest improvements in processing times. However, the Super Visa program, designed for parents and grandparents, has seen wait times increase across the board, with Pakistan and the U. S. experiencing the most substantial hikes.
While these processing time adjustments are generally positive news for many, it's important to note that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) provides estimates, not guarantees. Actual processing times can vary based on individual application complexity and the specific visa office handling the case. Nonetheless, the recent updates suggest a continued effort by IRCC to manage application backlogs and streamline processes for temporary residents.
