Canada Faces Moderate to Severe Drought Conditions

Share:

Canada is grappling with moderate to severe drought conditions across the country as summer begins, according to the latest Canadian Drought Monitor update. Approximately 25 per cent of the nation is experiencing abnormally dry or drought conditions, a slight increase from May.

British Columbia is facing the most significant worsening of conditions, with 40 per cent of the province now dry or in drought, impacting 71 per cent of its agricultural lands. The interior of the province, along with coastal areas near Vancouver and Victoria, are experiencing moderate to severe drought. This is attributed to a combination of dry weather, warm temperatures, and rapid snowmelt.

In contrast, the Prairies have seen largely unchanged conditions, though a swath of southern Alberta remains in severe drought. Northeastern Quebec and western Labrador are also experiencing moderate to severe drought. However, the Maritime provinces have seen improvement due to recent rainfall.

The persistent dryness poses risks beyond agriculture, with an increased threat of wildfires in affected regions. The prolonged lack of precipitation, coupled with warmer temperatures, creates a concerning outlook for many parts of Canada as the summer progresses.
