Alberta Earthquake Startles Grande Prairie Residents

Share:

A 3.8-magnitude earthquake struck northwestern Alberta on Thursday evening, startling residents in the Grande Prairie region. The seismic event, which occurred around 6:30 p. m. MT on July 9, 2026, was felt across a wide area, prompting more than 30 reports to Earthquakes Canada.

Residents described shaking furniture and rattling windows. Stephanie Brown, a Grande Prairie resident, reported hearing a cracking sound from her kitchen, though no visible damage was found. Jason Johnston, from the nearby hamlet of Grovedale, described his entire trailer shaking while he was in bed.

Earthquakes Canada, a division of Natural Resources Canada, suspects the earthquake was industry-related, classifying it as "known induced." The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) mandates mitigation protocols for companies when such events occur. While this earthquake was felt, seismic analysts note that events of this magnitude are not uncommon in the region, with over 15 similar or larger quakes recorded within 50 kilometres of the epicentre since 2019.

No injuries or significant damage have been reported. This event serves as a reminder of the seismic activity present in Alberta, often linked to industrial operations in the province.
