Trump Demands Half of Gordie Howe Bridge From Canada

President Donald Trump is threatening to block the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, demanding that the U. S. receive compensation for what he claims America has given Canada. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated the U. S. should own "at least one half of this asset". He also claimed Canada has treated the U. S. unfairly for decades.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, linking Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, is scheduled to open in early 2026. Canada is funding the $4.7 billion project, with costs to be recouped through tolls over 30 years. Trump's complaints include that the bridge contains "virtually no U. S. content" and that Canada owns both the Canadian and U. S. sides.

Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that he spoke with Trump and assured him the situation would be resolved. Carney clarified that Canada paid for the bridge and ownership is shared between the governments of Michigan and Canada. He also noted that steel from both countries was used in construction.

The White House insists that Trump has the right to amend the permit for the bridge. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that it is unacceptable for Canada to control what crosses the bridge and that more American-made materials should have been used. The dispute comes as the U. S. and Canada prepare to renegotiate their trade agreement.
