Surrey Faces Third Fatal Pedestrian Crash This Week

Share:

Surrey is reeling after a third pedestrian was killed in a vehicle collision this week. The latest incident occurred Friday evening in the Cedar Hills neighborhood, when a 22-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle on 128 Street near 96 Avenue. According to the Surrey Police Service (SPS), the driver remained at the scene and was taken into custody, with impairment believed to be a potential contributing factor.

This tragic event follows two other fatal pedestrian collisions earlier in the week. On Wednesday evening, an 81-year-old woman was killed after being struck by a vehicle in the Whalley area. Then, on Thursday morning, a 45-year-old woman died after being hit by a vehicle, also in Whalley. Police have stated that impairment was not suspected in either of those earlier incidents.

The series of fatalities has prompted serious concerns about pedestrian safety in Surrey. The SPS is urging anyone who witnessed any of the collisions or has dashcam footage to contact them at 604-599-0502. The investigations are ongoing, and police are working to determine the factors that contributed to these tragic events.

The spike in pedestrian deaths will likely lead to increased calls for preventative measures, such as enhanced crosswalk visibility, reduced speed limits in high-risk areas, and increased enforcement of traffic laws. Surrey residents are reminded to exercise caution while driving and walking, especially during periods of low visibility.
