Federal assistance is being mobilized as British Columbia grapples with a severe wildfire crisis, prompting the Canadian Armed Forces to be placed on standby. The province has experienced a rapid deterioration of the wildfire situation over the weekend, particularly in the Okanagan region, where one death has been confirmed and approximately 20,000 people have been forced to flee their homes.
The Bald Range wildfire, which roared into the outskirts of Summerland on the western shore of Okanagan Lake, has devastated communities. Evacuation orders are in place for Summerland, Peachland, and surrounding areas, with tens of thousands of residents displaced. An 80-year-old woman died while attempting to escape her home in Meadow Valley, west of Summerland. The community of Faulder has also reportedly been largely incinerated.
Defence Minister David McGuinty stated that the Canadian Armed Forces are in constant contact with provincial and federal officials and are prepared to respond if a formal request for military assistance is received. The federal government has already approved provincial requests for aid related to shelter and accommodation for evacuees. Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski has been working with federal officials to ensure support reaches those most in need.
The province has declared a state of emergency, with Premier David Eby describing the rapid spread of the fires as "like a bomb going off." Forecasters have warned that prolonged hot and dry weather conditions have created an environment for "explosive" fire behaviour, and the situation is expected to persist well into the fall.
