Stéphane Dion, former leader of the Liberal Party and Canada's ambassador to France and Monaco, has been appointed as the first "diplomat in residence" at the Université de Montréal. Dion, who previously taught political science at the university from 1984 to 1996, will return to share his knowledge in areas such as foreign policy, public administration, and the environment. His three-year appointment begins on March 1.

Dion completed his posting as ambassador to France and Monaco in December 2025, after serving since June 2022. He was also Canada's ambassador to Germany from 2017 and served as the prime minister's special envoy to the European Union and Europe. Dion's extensive experience in federal politics includes serving as Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Minister of the Environment, and Minister of Foreign Affairs. He also notably drafted the Clarity Act on Quebec's secession in response to the 1995 referendum.

In an interview, Dion expressed his desire to remain useful to society. The Université de Montréal stated that Dion will participate in panels and conferences, and assist with research projects. He hopes to offer guidance on issues such as Canadian unity, global security, and Canada-Europe relations. Given ongoing discussions around separation in both Alberta and Quebec, Dion's experience with Canadian unity will likely be highly sought after.

Dion emphasized the importance of universities as places for debate and advancing science. He aims to contribute his expertise to the university community. Dion's return to the Université de Montréal marks a new chapter in his career, blending his academic background with his extensive experience in Canadian and international politics.
