Sinaloa Cartel Suspected in Canadian Mining Workers' Kidnapping

Share:

A faction of the notorious Sinaloa cartel, known as "Los Chapitos," is under suspicion for the kidnapping of 10 employees of Vizsla Silver Corp, a Canadian mining company with operations in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. Security and Citizen Protection Secretary Omar García Harfuch announced that authorities are actively searching for the leader of a cell within Los Chapitos, which operates near Concordia, where the abduction occurred on January 24.

The Vancouver-based Vizsla Silver confirmed the kidnapping and has temporarily suspended operations at its Panuco silver-gold project. The company stated that their "immediate priority is the safety and well-being of the individuals involved". While the company has not confirmed the nationalities of the kidnapped workers, local media reports suggest most are Mexican nationals. Global Affairs Canada stated that they are monitoring the situation closely and are not aware of any Canadian citizens impacted by this incident.

The brazen abduction has heightened concerns about the security risks faced by mining companies operating in regions controlled by drug cartels. Sinaloa has been gripped by a cartel civil war since 2024, leading to increased violence and instability. The Sinaloan attorney general's office has launched an investigation into the kidnapping, collaborating with federal authorities, including the military, to conduct search operations.

The incident has already impacted Vizsla Silver, with the company's shares plunging 15% following the announcement of the kidnapping. The Association of Mining Engineers, Metallurgists and Geologists has expressed deep concern over the kidnapping, emphasizing that the victims were professionals "performing their work honestly". The situation remains fluid as authorities continue their search and investigation.
