Sherwood RM Council Plunged into Chaos as Majority Resigns

Share:

The Rural Municipality of Sherwood, which surrounds Regina, Saskatchewan, is grappling with a significant disruption to its local government. Reeve Susan Oakley-Paul, along with councillors Trent Reiger, John Wilke, and Grant Paul, have all resigned, effective immediately. The sudden departure of the majority of council members has left the RM without the quorum necessary to conduct regular municipal business.

The RM of Sherwood confirmed the resignations Wednesday, but offered no specific reasons for the departures. A statement released by the municipality stated that they respect the decisions of the former council members and appreciate their contributions. CTV News reported that those who responded to requests for comment declined for legal reasons. Public records show that the council held a closed special meeting on March 16, with the agenda including discussions on a code of ethics and ombudsman complaints.

Despite the unexpected upheaval, the RM administration assures residents that municipal operations, services, and administrative functions will continue without interruption, under the leadership of Chief Administrative Officer Brad Wiebe and the remaining council members. The Ministry of Government Relations has initiated a search for individuals to appoint to the council to restore quorum, as stipulated by Saskatchewan's Municipalities Act. Without a majority of members present, the council cannot conduct valid proceedings.

The RM of Sherwood has recently been in the news for approving a large AI data centre within its boundaries. While there is no indication that the resignations are connected to the data centre project, the timing of the events raises questions about the stability of the municipality's leadership during a period of significant development. The situation remains fluid as the province works to restore the council to full capacity.
