Poilievre Condemns Trump's Attacks, Seeks Trade Stability

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has publicly pushed back against U. S. President Donald Trump's recent comments regarding Canada, describing them as "wrong" and harmful to the crucial trade relationship between the two nations. Speaking at the Economic Club of Canada in Toronto on Thursday, Poilievre stressed the importance of maintaining a stable and mutually beneficial trade relationship with the United States, despite the current tensions.

Poilievre emphasized that Canada should focus on what it can control, strengthening its own economy and leveraging its resources to negotiate effectively with the U. S.. He specifically mentioned ending tariffs on steel, aluminum, autos, and softwood lumber as key objectives. He also addressed Trump's threats to potentially annex Canada, stating firmly that there is "zero chance" of that ever happening.

The Conservative leader proposed the creation of an all-party working group to address the upcoming review of the Canada-U. S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), signaling a willingness to collaborate with the Liberal government on this critical issue. Poilievre also suggested tying Canadian purchases of American military equipment to the achievement of tariff-free trade. He also voiced his support for a free-trade deal with India, while cautioning against substituting the U. S. with China as a primary trading partner.

Poilievre's speech comes amid ongoing trade disputes and uncertainty surrounding the future of Canada-U. S. economic relations under the Trump administration. His remarks represent a direct response to Trump's rhetoric and a call for a more stable and predictable trade environment. He stressed that despite disagreements, the partnership between Canada and the U. S. remains profoundly in the interests of both countries.
