Share:

Prime Minister Mark Carney convened the Incident Response Group (IRG) today to address the ongoing hostilities in Iran and the Middle East. The meeting, attended by ministers and senior officials, centered on ensuring the safety and security of Canadians and working with international partners to de-escalate the conflict.

Canada was not consulted and has no plans to participate in the offensive actions undertaken by the U. S. and Israel against Iran. The conflict has expanded due to attacks by Iran and its proxies across the Middle East. The government is focused on facilitating the departure of Canadians who wish to leave the region, including the 5,200 who have requested assistance. Arrangements are being made for seats on flights from Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates, as well as buses from Qatar and Israel to transport Canadians to safer locations. Surge support is also being provided near the Iranian border to assist with visa requirements and onward travel.

The IRG also reviewed potential changes to the threat landscape within Canada and emphasized the importance of maintaining vigilance to enhance domestic security. Prime Minister Carney provided updates from his recent discussions with leaders in the region and the G7. Canada continues to support de-escalation efforts and calls for an immediate end to attacks on civilian infrastructure, in accordance with international law. The IRG affirmed that the security and sovereignty of partners in the region must be protected.

Canada is committed to taking all possible measures to protect its citizens abroad, including those serving in diplomatic missions. The government continues to monitor the situation closely and adapt its response as needed to ensure the safety and well-being of Canadians in the region.
