Ottawa-Gatineau Braces for Significant Freezing Rain Event

Share:

The Ottawa-Gatineau area is bracing for a significant freezing rain event expected to begin Wednesday, March 11, potentially lasting up to 24 hours in some areas. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement, warning of ice build-up between 10 to 20 mm, which could lead to broken tree branches and widespread utility outages. A series of low-pressure systems are responsible for the expected freezing rain across parts of southern Ontario.

The weather agency is cautioning that the freezing rain may fall heavily at times and not freeze immediately, leading to potential localized flooding in low-lying areas. Residents are advised to prepare for icy and slippery roads and walkways, which could significantly impact rush hour traffic. Environment Canada suggests considering delaying or cancelling non-essential travel.

The City of Gatineau is asking residents to avoid travel as much as possible, and ensure they have an emergency kit in their vehicle if travel is unavoidable. Those with backup power sources should ensure they are ready for use. For the Outaouais region of Quebec, communities north of Gatineau could see up to 30 mm of freezing rain, with Environment Canada calling it a "potentially critical" event.

The freezing rain is expected to begin Tuesday night or Wednesday morning and last through Wednesday or Wednesday night. Environment Canada will likely issue freezing rain warnings as the event draws nearer, and residents are encouraged to monitor alerts and forecasts.
