Ottawa Area Shaken by Magnitude 3.9 Earthquake

Share:

A magnitude 3.9 earthquake shook the Ottawa-Gatineau region and parts of western Quebec early Tuesday afternoon, April 14, 2026. Earthquakes Canada reported the quake was centred north of Shawville, Quebec, approximately 60 kilometers northwest of Ottawa.

Reports of the tremor began surfacing around 12:36 p. m., with residents from Ottawa to Maniwaki and Pembroke reporting feeling the effects. While most reports described weak shaking, the event was widely felt across the region. According to Volcano Discovery, a slightly stronger quake of around 4.6 magnitude may have occurred in the same general area earlier in the day.

Earthquakes in this region are not uncommon. The Ottawa Valley / Western Quebec seismic zone regularly experiences small earthquakes. A quake in the 3.5–4.5 magnitude range is often felt as a quick rumble or shake, is unlikely to cause damage, and can be felt quite far away.

There have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Earthquakes Canada continues to monitor the situation. Residents are encouraged to report their experiences on the Earthquakes Canada website.
