The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired goaltender Dennis Hildeby from the Toronto Maple Leafs in a move that signals a fresh start for the promising 24-year-old. The trade, which also involved draft picks, saw forward Nick Paul head to Toronto. Hildeby, originally a fourth-round pick of the Maple Leafs in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, is now set to compete for a roster spot with the Lightning.
Hildeby, a native of Jarfalla, Sweden, made his NHL debut during the 2024-25 season and has shown flashes of potential in his limited NHL appearances. Last season, he appeared in a career-high 20 games for the Maple Leafs, posting a 5-7-4 record with a.914 save percentage and a 2.86 goals-against average. His performance in Toronto, where he led all Maple Leafs goalies in save percentage and goals-against average, caught the attention of the Lightning's management.
The move to Tampa Bay presents Hildeby with an opportunity to learn behind one of the league's premier goaltenders, Andrei Vasilevskiy, and potentially step into a significant role. He is signed for the next two seasons on an NHL minimum contract, providing the Lightning with valuable goaltending depth at a favourable price. Hildeby expressed his excitement for the new environment, stating his intention to keep improving his game and not overcomplicate things as he aims to make a lasting impression in the NHL.
The trade also reflects the Maple Leafs' goaltending situation, which has become crowded with recent signings and prospect development. With other goalies in their system, including Artur Akhtyamov, and the need to potentially navigate waiver claims, the Maple Leafs opted to move Hildeby to Tampa Bay. This fresh start in Florida offers Hildeby a chance to carve out his own NHL career.
