Matthew Mayich, a Hamilton-born NHL prospect, is in hospital in Arizona after suffering an off-ice injury during a training session. The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) confirmed the incident, stating that Mayich was hospitalized on August 20 while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season in Arizona.
Mayich, a 21-year-old defenceman, was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft. He played minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies before joining the OHL's Ottawa 67's for four seasons. Most recently, Mayich transferred to Arizona State University after spending the previous season at Clarkson University.
The St. Louis Blues have issued a statement expressing their concern and support for Mayich and his family. "The entire Blues organization is keeping Matthew Mayich close to our hearts as we pray for his comfort and recovery," said Doug Armstrong, the Blues' president of hockey operations. The OHL also shared similar sentiments, with commissioner Bryan Crawford stating, "Our thoughts are with Matthew, his parents John and Christina, and the entire Mayich family."
Arizona State University has confirmed that a student-athlete, a member of their hockey team, collapsed during an outdoor morning exercise session and remains hospitalized. The university is currently reviewing the circumstances surrounding the workout, which occurred amidst a period of extreme heat in the region. The Tempe Fire Medical Rescue had been dispatched to Sun Angel Stadium following a report of a heat-related illness.
