Freezing Rain Shuts Down Saskatchewan Roads Amid Warm Spell

Share:

Multiple highways across Saskatchewan are closed due to freezing rain, creating hazardous driving conditions for travellers. A surge of warm air following a period of cold weather has resulted in the dangerous mix of precipitation. The closures impact major routes, including sections of Highway 1, the Trans-Canada Highway, and Highway 11, a vital corridor connecting Regina and Saskatoon. The Saskatchewan Highway Hotline is advising against all non-essential travel in affected areas.

The freezing rain is coating roadways with a thin layer of ice, making driving extremely difficult and increasing the risk of accidents. Environment Canada had issued weather advisories earlier in the week, warning of the potential for freezing rain as temperatures fluctuated. The combination of melting snow and sudden freezing is creating particularly treacherous conditions on bridges and overpasses.

Local municipalities are scrambling to respond, deploying sand and salt trucks to try and improve road conditions. However, the ongoing precipitation is making it difficult to keep up. "We're doing everything we can to keep the roads as clear as possible, but the freezing rain is relentless," said a spokesperson for the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways in a press release Saturday. "We urge everyone to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary."

The closures are expected to remain in effect until the weather improves. Environment Canada forecasts a gradual warming trend throughout the weekend, which should help to alleviate the icy conditions. Motorists are encouraged to check the Highway Hotline for the latest updates before travelling.
