Food Banks Across Canada Struggle With Soaring Demand

Share:

Food banks across Canada are facing immense pressure as demand for their services continues to surge. With the rising cost of living outpacing wage growth, more Canadians are turning to food banks for assistance, pushing these organizations to their breaking points. Many food banks are now being forced to make difficult decisions, including reducing the amount of food they provide and scaling back essential services.

The Moose Jaw & District Food Bank in Saskatchewan, for example, is implementing changes starting April 1st to cope with a staggering 150% increase in visits over the past four years. These changes include limiting households to one visit per month instead of two and reducing the quantity of food distributed per visit. Executive director Jason Moore noted that their resources simply cannot keep pace with the overwhelming demand. This situation is not unique to Moose Jaw; food banks across the country are reporting similar trends.

According to Food Banks Canada, monthly visits reached nearly 2.2 million in March 2025, a 5% increase from the previous year and nearly double the number from March 2019. This unprecedented level of need is straining food bank resources, with some having to reduce food distribution or cut back on vital wrap-around programs. In Ontario, a recent report revealed that over one million people accessed food banks in the past year, highlighting the growing reliance on these services.

The increasing number of working Canadians turning to food banks is particularly concerning. With rising housing costs, childcare shortages, and stagnant wages, many employed individuals and families are struggling to afford basic necessities. Experts emphasize the need for policy changes at various levels of government to address the root causes of food insecurity and alleviate the pressure on food banks. This includes raising minimum wages, increasing social assistance, and implementing affordable housing initiatives.
