A mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in northeastern British Columbia has claimed the lives of eight people, including the suspect, and left dozens injured. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to the "active shooter" situation at approximately 2:15 p. m. MST on February 10, 2026, prompting a lockdown of the secondary and elementary schools in the town of about 2,400 residents.
The RCMP have confirmed that the suspect is deceased, believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities are still investigating whether a second suspect was involved in the tragic event. Initial reports indicate that six victims were found dead inside the school, with another dying en route to hospital. Two additional fatalities were discovered at a residence believed to be connected to the shooting. At least 27 people were injured in the attack.
"An excess" of RCMP and ambulance resources were deployed to Tumbler Ridge following the shooting, according to Peace River South MLA Larry Neufeld. He urged residents to shelter in place while the RCMP secured the community. The provincial government website indicates that Tumbler Ridge Secondary School has 175 students enrolled from grades 7 to 12.
The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the province and across Canada, prompting renewed discussions about school safety and gun control measures. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to be released as they become available.
