Eastern Ontario, Western Quebec Endure Peak Heat Wave

Share:

A sweltering heat wave has settled over eastern Ontario and western Quebec, with Tuesday expected to be the most intense day of the event. Environment Canada has issued heat warnings across the affected areas as temperatures soar.

Highs are forecast to reach the mid-30s Celsius, with humidity pushing humidex values into the low 40s. In Ottawa, the forecast high of 35 C could make it the hottest day of 2026 so far. Other communities like Brockville and Kingston are also anticipated to set daily heat records. The extreme heat has prompted some local businesses, like the Heart and Soul Café in Dunrobin, to temporarily close to ensure staff safety due to high indoor temperatures.

The heat is also contributing to an elevated fire risk in areas such as the Pontiac region and parts of Algonquin Park. Restrictions are in place, including a burn ban in western Quebec, to mitigate fire hazards. Residents are advised to monitor for signs of heat exhaustion, such as headaches and dizziness, and to seek immediate medical attention if experiencing symptoms of heat stroke. Environment Canada anticipates the heat and humidity to begin easing by Wednesday.

The intense conditions are part of a larger heat dome affecting parts of North America. While relief is expected for some areas by Wednesday, southern Ontario may experience persistent high temperatures through Thursday. The long-term forecast suggests an increase in the frequency and intensity of such heat events across Canada due to climate change.
