Carney Adjusts Canada's Iran War Stance as Trump's Aims Evolve

Canada's initial support for the U. S.-led war in Iran has evolved as the objectives of President Donald Trump became more defined, according to Prime Minister Mark Carney. In a recent interview with The Canadian Press, Carney stated that the "clarity about what the objectives were, were not there at the start and have arguably evolved over time".

On February 28, the day the U. S. military action commenced, Carney voiced strong support for the operation. However, he later expressed regret that the U. S. did not consult the United Nations regarding the conflict, suggesting it might violate international law. This shift in position has drawn criticism from various factions, with some arguing that Carney has weakened a principled stance and others claiming he contradicted his Davos speech about rejecting hegemonic behavior.

Despite these concerns, Carney emphasized Canada's long-held view of Iran as "the largest exporter of terror, state-sponsored terror, in the world," adding that the regime "has murdered hundreds of Canadians". He affirmed that Iran should not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. While Canada has abstained from direct military involvement, Carney indicated a willingness to potentially support efforts to restore shipping access in the Strait of Hormuz if a ceasefire is established.

Carney is scheduled to attend the European Political Community summit in Armenia, where he will engage with other leaders on matters of politics, security, and infrastructure in light of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He noted that his presence at the summit, as the only non-European leader, is partly to collaborate with colleagues on providing assistance once a lasting ceasefire is in place.
