Prime Minister Mark Carney stated this week that he remains in regular communication with U. S. President Donald Trump, even as trade tensions between Canada and the United States escalate. The ongoing trade dispute has seen both countries implement retaliatory tariffs on a variety of goods.
Carney indicated that recent discussions with Trump have primarily centered on international affairs, particularly the wars in Ukraine and Iran and their impact on global energy and grain markets. He emphasized that despite the trade disagreements, Canada and the U. S. have a responsibility to collaborate on global issues. "We can compartmentalize," Carney said during a press conference in Calgary, alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. "In terms of playing that [international] role, we continue to work with the United States."
The trade negotiations between the two North American neighbours have been contentious, with both sides exchanging accusations. The U. S. has imposed significant tariffs on Canadian products and banned others, while Canada has countered with its own tariffs. Despite the friction, Carney expressed optimism that a mutually beneficial deal is still achievable, stating Canada is "always ready to strike a fair deal." He also addressed remarks from U. S. officials, describing some of them as "beneath their office." Meanwhile, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, speaking in New York, expressed that Canadians feel "wounded" and "confused" by the escalating trade war.
