Atmospheric River Prompts Alert for B.C.'s Sea to Sky

A weather alert has been issued for British Columbia's Sea to Sky Highway due to a prolonged atmospheric river impacting the region. Environment Canada issued the alert on Friday, March 13, 2026, warning of heavy rainfall from Sunday, March 15, through Wednesday, March 18. The River Forecast Centre has also issued a High Streamflow Advisory for Howe Sound and the Sea-to-Sky Corridor, including Squamish.

The atmospheric river is expected to bring significant rainfall to the region, with Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasting totals of 150 to 200 mm for Howe Sound and the Sea to Sky area. Metro Vancouver could see 60 to 120 mm, while the North Shore mountains may receive 120 to 180 mm. Whistler and Pemberton are forecast to get 30 to 60 mm. Freezing levels are predicted to rise rapidly, reaching up to 3,000 metres above sea level by Monday, which will contribute to snowmelt and increased runoff.

The combination of heavy rain and snowmelt raises concerns about potential flooding, water pooling on roads, and an increased risk of landslides. The River Forecast Centre advises residents to stay safe near rivers and be prepared for challenging driving conditions and potential road washouts. Motorists are urged to exercise caution while travelling on the Sea to Sky Highway and other affected areas. Environment Canada advises drivers to turn on their lights, slow down, and maintain a safe following distance. It is important to adjust to winter driving behaviour and use winter tires and chains.
