Victoria Dragon Boat Festival Returns to Inner Harbour

The Canada Dry Victoria Dragon Boat Festival is once again gracing Victoria's Inner Harbour, transforming the waterfront into a hub of activity on June 20, 2026. This annual tradition, celebrating sport, culture, diversity, and community, has brought together approximately 30 teams for a day of spirited racing and festive atmosphere.

This year's festival features a notable change in schedule, moving from its traditional August dates to the first weekend of summer. This adjustment was made due to scheduling conflicts with other major regional events, including those connected to the FIFA World Cup in Vancouver. Dominic Lai, from the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival Society, noted that this earlier timing offers a unique opportunity to celebrate the start of summer while continuing a cherished local tradition.

Beyond the races, attendees enjoyed a variety of attractions, including live entertainment, diverse food vendors, cultural demonstrations, and a waterfront marketplace. Organizers also created an expansive waterfront pop-up patio, enhancing the festive environment at Ship Point and throughout the Inner Harbour. The festival also serves to foster connections between Chinese traditions and the local community, with partnerships including walking tours exploring the history of Victoria's Chinatown, one of Canada's oldest. Dragon boat racing itself has roots stretching back over 2,400 years in ancient China, and it first arrived in Victoria in 1994 as part of the Commonwealth Games celebrations. The event continues to be a cornerstone of Victoria's summer calendar, bringing together athletes, families, and visitors for a celebration of heritage and community spirit.
