Tragedy struck Toronto on Saturday evening as a shooting near the popular Salsa on St. Clair festival claimed two lives and left four others injured. The incident, which occurred around 8:12 p. m. near St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue, caused panic among festival-goers.

Toronto Police Deputy Chief Frank Barredo stated that while there was initial concern of an active shooter, it was determined to be an exchange of gunfire between individuals. Investigators have recovered two firearms from the scene. Both of the deceased victims were men. The four injured individuals were transported to area hospitals in serious condition.

Mayor Olivia Chow expressed her distress over the violence occurring amidst a family-friendly event. Ontario Premier Doug Ford also conveyed his condolences to the victims and their families, stating that the person responsible must be brought to justice. Authorities have not yet made any arrests, and the investigation into the exact number of suspects and the motive behind the shooting is ongoing. The Salsa on St. Clair festival is an annual celebration of Latin American culture that draws thousands to the city.

This incident stands out in Toronto, a city generally considered one of North America's safest major urban centers, where multiple-victim public shootings are uncommon. Police continue to secure the area as they work to piece together the events of that evening.
