Canadian flags waved and cheers erupted as Team Canada athletes arrived home on Monday, following their performance at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games. Supporters gathered at airports in Toronto and Montreal to welcome the athletes, signs and Canadian pride on full display. Team Canada finished the Games with 21 medals, including five gold.

While the medal count was lower compared to previous years, the athletes expressed their gratitude for the support they received from home. "Feels good, feels good to be back on Canadian soil," said curler Brett Gallant, who was part of Canada's gold-winning men's curling team. The women's hockey team, who secured a silver medal after a heartbreaking loss to the United States in overtime, also spoke about the support they felt throughout the tournament. Forward Natalie Spooner said, "We felt so much support from Canada, families and fans across the country and it's amazing".

Mikaël Kingsbury, who won gold in dual moguls, shared his excitement about his victory and being a flag-bearer. Speed skater Valérie Maltais, who won two bronze medals and a gold, spoke about the honor of being the flag bearer at the closing ceremonies. Bobsleigher Keaton Bruggeling, a first-time Olympian, described the reception back home as overwhelming, adding, "To have the rallying, feel the pride in the flag, it's an unbelievable feeling".

The performance at the 2026 Winter Olympics has sparked discussions about funding for high-performance sports in Canada. Some officials have warned that without increased financial support, Canada's standing in future Winter Olympics could be at risk. Despite these concerns, the focus on Monday was a celebration of the athletes' hard work and dedication.
