Sweden secured their spot in the Olympic quarterfinals with a commanding 5-1 victory over Latvia on Tuesday, setting the stage for a showdown with the United States. Gabriel Landeskog and Mika Zibanejad each contributed a goal and an assist, leading the Swedish team to a decisive win.
The Swedes showcased their offensive prowess early in the game, with Adrian Kempe and Landeskog scoring in the first period to give Sweden a 2-0 lead. Filip Forsberg added another goal in the second period, extending Sweden's advantage. Despite a goal from Latvia's Eduards Tralmaks, Sweden maintained control of the game. In the third period, Mika Zibanejad and William Nylander sealed the victory with additional goals. Goaltender Jacob Markstrom secured his second win of the tournament, making 20 saves and keeping Latvia's offense at bay.
"This is what I've been waiting for," Rasmus Dahlin said. "It feels like the tournament starts for real now, so me and the team are extremely excited." Victor Hedman added, "Time's flying, and I'm enjoying every single second of it."
Sweden's victory means they will face the undefeated United States in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Other quarterfinal matchups include Germany versus Slovakia, Czechia versus Canada, and Switzerland versus Finland. For Canada, the game against Czechia is a rematch.
