Stanley Cup Dips into Ice Cream in Ottawa Visit

Hockey's most coveted prize, the Stanley Cup, recently made a delightful detour in Ottawa, swapping its traditional celebratory beverages for a generous serving of ice cream and an array of toppings. The trophy's stop in the nation's capital was part of a personalized tour by Carolina Hurricanes goaltending coach Paul Schonfelder, a Barrhaven resident.

Following NHL tradition, each member of the championship-winning team gets a day with the Stanley Cup to celebrate in their own unique way. For Schonfelder, this meant sharing a sweet experience with his community. He brought the trophy to Chocolat Favoris, a dessert shop in Barrhaven, where it was filled with vanilla ice cream, chocolate and caramel sauce, gummy bears, and cotton candy topping. Schonfelder then served the ice cream to enthusiastic fans, turning the iconic trophy into a temporary dessert dispenser.

The Stanley Cup's visit also included stops at CHEO, a children's hospital, and the Minto Recreation Complex, before its sugary indulgence. While the Hurricanes had previously eliminated the Ottawa Senators in the playoffs, local fans still turned out in large numbers to catch a glimpse of the historic trophy. This personalized celebration underscores the deep connection hockey players and staff have with the sport and their communities, even after a thrilling championship victory. Stanley Cup guard Walt Neubrand noted that while many unique items have been placed in the cup over his nearly 30 years of service, red wine is the only item prohibited due to its staining potential.
