Claude Giroux is set to begin his fifth season with the Ottawa Senators after agreeing to a one-year contract, the team confirmed Tuesday. The deal carries a base salary of $2 million, with performance bonuses that could bring the total value up to $5 million. This marks a return for the 38-year-old forward, who has become a key veteran presence for the Senators since joining the team in 2022.
Giroux expressed his desire to remain in Ottawa, citing his strong connection with his teammates and the positive team environment. "I chose to come back because I want to be here. I'm excited to be an Ottawa Senator," Giroux stated. "Being around those guys for four years, we got really close. This team feels like a family. I just care for those players." This sentiment was echoed by Senators General Manager Steve Staios, who praised Giroux's professionalism and commitment. "Claude took his time to evaluate his options and his decision to re-sign with us shows his belief and commitment to our group," Staios said. "He is the consummate professional and brings veteran experience to our core on and off the ice."
Last season, Giroux played in all 82 games, marking the tenth time in his career he has not missed a single game in a season. He recorded 14 goals and 35 assists for 49 points, also leading the NHL with a 63.1 faceoff winning percentage. Since arriving in Ottawa, Giroux has played in 327 of a possible 328 regular-season games and all 10 of the team's playoff appearances. His career totals include 1,165 points in 1,345 NHL games, making him one of the league's most accomplished active players. The contract also includes a full no-movement clause, ensuring Giroux's place with the Senators for the upcoming season.
