Edmonton Oilers forward Josh Samanski is set to make his NHL debut tonight against the Anaheim Ducks, marking the culmination of a unique journey for the undrafted free agent. The 23-year-old German-Canadian player has been recalled from the Oilers' AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors, where he has quickly become a key player. In a corresponding move, forward Isaac Howard has been reassigned to the Condors.
Samanski's path to the NHL has been unconventional. Born in Erding, Germany, he developed as a youth player before his family moved to Canada. He then returned to Germany and played in the DEL, Germany's top league. Samanski signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Oilers last April. This season with the Condors, he has tallied seven goals and 28 points in 39 games, showcasing his responsible, two-way presence.
In addition to his NHL debut, Samanski has also been named to the German national team for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. His success in the AHL and his upcoming Olympic appearance highlight his rapid development and potential as a valuable player for both the Oilers and Germany. Oilers fans will be watching closely as Samanski gets his first taste of NHL action.
