Sabres Turn to Lyon in Game 3 Against Bruins

The Buffalo Sabres are making a goaltending change as they head to Boston for Game 3 of their first-round playoff series against the Bruins. Veteran Alex Lyon will start in net, replacing Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, who was pulled in the third period of Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Bruins. The series is currently tied 1-1.

Luukkonen allowed four goals on just 19 shots in Game 2, including a soft goal from centre ice by Morgan Geekie. While Luukkonen and Lyon split time during the regular season, Luukkonen had taken over the number one role heading into the playoffs. Lyon posted a 2.77 goals-against average and a.907 save percentage this season. However, he struggled in his last three starts, surrendering 13 goals. Lyon also dealt with a lower-body injury late in the season.

Despite his recent struggles, Lyon does bring playoff experience to the Sabres. He started three games for the Florida Panthers during their Stanley Cup Final run. The Sabres are hoping Lyon's veteran presence will provide a boost as they look to regain the series lead in Boston. Buffalo is making its first playoff appearance since 2011, ending an NHL-record 14-year drought.

The Sabres' power play has also struggled, going 0-for-9 in the first two games. They will need to improve on special teams if they hope to advance against a tough Bruins team. With the series shifting to Boston, the Sabres are looking for Lyon to step up and provide some stability in net.
