Buffalo Sabres fans, the long wait is finally over. The Sabres have clinched a playoff berth for the first time since the 2010-2011 season, ending the NHL's longest active playoff drought at 14 years. The Sabres secured their spot on Saturday without even hitting the ice, as the New York Rangers defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-1, eliminating the Red Wings from contention.
The Sabres had been on the cusp of clinching for several days, with their magic number dwindling as they approached the post-season. A loss to the Ottawa Senators on Thursday added to the tension, but the Rangers took care of business, sparking celebrations in Buffalo. The team currently sits second in the Atlantic Division, tied in points with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
"Maybe the pressure of being there, just a little bit of that caught up to the guys," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said after the loss to Ottawa, acknowledging the weight of the moment. However, the team's strong performance throughout the season, especially after the Winter Olympics break where they went 12-1-0 in their first 13 games, positioned them well for a playoff run.
Now that the drought is over, the Sabres and their fans can look forward to the excitement of playoff hockey. The team will aim to elevate their game as they prepare for the challenges ahead, hoping to make a deep run in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
