Luke Prokop, the 23-year-old defenceman and the only openly gay player under NHL contract, is set to be featured in a documentary this summer, offering a detailed look into his path to the Edmonton Oilers. The film, titled "The Hockey Player," will chronicle Prokop's journey through various hockey leagues and his experiences as an openly gay athlete in a sport that has historically struggled with LGBTQ+ inclusion.
Prokop, who came out in 2021 while with the Nashville Predators, has become a pioneer for the LGBTQ+ community in hockey. A third-round draft pick in 2020, Prokop played junior hockey with the Calgary Hitmen, Edmonton Oil Kings, and Seattle Thunderbirds before turning pro. He is currently with the Oilers' AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. Prokop signed a one-year contract with the Condors in August 2025, marking a significant moment as he joined his hometown organization.
In an interview with Daily Hive Vancouver, Prokop shared that coming out has allowed him to "really embrace who I am" and has strengthened his relationships with teammates and coaches. He hopes the documentary will encourage others to live authentically and pursue their dreams without fear. The NHL has faced criticism for its handling of LGBTQ+ issues, including the recent ban on specialty jerseys after some players refused to wear them. Prokop's story offers a contrasting narrative, highlighting acceptance and the importance of representation.
The documentary, filmed over four seasons, captures Prokop's experiences in the WHL, ECHL, and AHL, as well as NHL training camps with Nashville and Edmonton. Prokop hopes his story will inspire others to live their true lives and pursue their dreams without fear. "It just gives another level of hope," Prokop said.
