Poilievre Voices Concerns Over Carney's Fiscal Watchdog Plan

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has voiced "serious" reservations regarding Prime Minister Mark Carney's suggestion for a new Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO). Poilievre is advocating for the current interim PBO, Jason Jacques, to be appointed to the position on a permanent basis.

Poilievre made his concerns public in a letter posted on social media, suggesting he was informed of Carney's suggested appointee on Sunday. He argues that the PBO office "cannot provide oversight and transparency" until a permanent budget officer is in place. The interim PBO's six-month term concluded recently, leaving the position vacant. With no budget officer currently installed, the office is unable to publish reports or accept new requests from parliamentarians, though existing requests are still being processed.

A spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, Laura Scaffidi, stated that Jacques was appointed on an interim basis to allow for an "open, transparent and merit-based selection process" for the permanent PBO. Scaffidi added that the government has put forward its nominee and has been consulting with parliamentary parties since Sunday, in accordance with the Parliament of Canada Act. Once these consultations are complete, the government will present its nominee to the House of Commons and the Senate.

Poilievre has been a vocal critic of Carney's fiscal policies. He has previously criticized Carney's approach to the federal deficit and government spending.
