Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has formally requested an emergency debate in Parliament to address the growing concerns surrounding Canada's economy. In a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney on Sunday, Poilievre criticized the Liberal government's handling of the economy, pointing to recent data indicating a technical recession.
The call for an emergency debate follows Statistics Canada's report revealing that the Canadian economy contracted for the second consecutive quarter, declining 0.1% in the first quarter of 2026. This meets the technical definition of a recession, although some economists argue that the marginal declines don't yet constitute a widespread downturn. Poilievre, however, insists there is "nothing technical about it," highlighting rising mortgage delinquency rates and increased reliance on food banks.
Poilievre is laying blame squarely on Prime Minister Carney's policies, stating that the only way to remedy the "Liberal recession" is to reverse the economic strategies implemented over the past decade. He specifically targeted the industrial carbon price and the impact assessment act, which he claims hinder essential projects like pipeline construction. He stated that Canada is the only G7 country with economic shrinkage last quarter.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne defended the government's economic plan during question period, emphasizing investments in housing, infrastructure, and innovation. He expressed confidence in the Canadian economy and accused the Conservatives of relying on "conspiracy theories". Poilievre aims to use the debate to press Carney on his plan to reverse the recession and address rising inflation.
