Immigration Minister Lena Diab has stated that Canada's online passport renewal system has been tested and is ready for increased demand as the government removes the daily application cap. This move allows all eligible adult Canadians to renew their passports online at any time. Previously, a daily limit of 2,000 applications was in place, and the service was restricted to those whose passports expired within six months or had already expired.
The expansion aims to provide a more convenient and secure option for Canadians seeking to renew their travel documents. Eligible individuals will no longer need to wait for a specific online application slot. The online system has been in development and testing phases since December 2024, with gradual capacity increases leading up to this full rollout. Minister Diab emphasized that in-person and mail-in renewal options remain available for those who prefer them.
This enhancement to passport services follows a period where in-person application centres were overwhelmed due to the easing of pandemic-related travel restrictions, leading to significant backlogs. The government has also implemented a "30 days or free" policy, where passport application fees are reimbursed if processing exceeds 30 business days. The standard processing time for online applications is 20 days. While the system is designed for efficiency, the minister's assurance comes as Canadians prepare for potential peak travel seasons.
The Passport Program Modernization Initiative has been working to deliver secure and user-friendly digital services. Automated decision-making for adult renewals has already reduced processing requirements for a portion of applications. The government continues to monitor the system and explore future improvements, potentially including options for minors and Canadians living abroad.
