The federal Liberal government has unveiled an additional $51 million in aid and reconstruction funding for Ukraine. The announcement, made on Friday, includes provisions for humanitarian aid such as food and shelter, as well as support programs for Ukrainian veterans.
Of the total commitment, $32 million will be channeled through established aid organizations, including the Red Cross, the United Nations Refugee Agency, and the World Food Programme. These funds will address urgent humanitarian needs arising from the conflict. An additional $5 million has been specifically allocated to programs designed to help veterans reintegrate into Ukrainian society. Secretary of State for International Development Randeep Sarai noted that Canada signed a memorandum of understanding with Ukraine to share expertise gained from assisting veterans of the Afghanistan conflict, particularly in areas such as PTSD and job placement.
Sarai, speaking from the Kyiv Post newspaper office, highlighted the unique challenges faced by Ukrainians, stating, "Ukrainians go through this every day, and then they go back to work in the morning and they take their kids to school". He also said it was "very eye-opening" to see schools outfitted with shelters. The funding also includes $6 million to support the conduct of credible, inclusive and well-prepared post-war elections in Ukraine.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion in 2022, Canada has committed nearly $26 billion in multifaceted aid to Ukraine. This latest announcement reaffirms Canada's commitment to supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and its people in the face of ongoing challenges.
