MPs Conclude Spring Session, Depart for Summer Break

Ottawa - The House of Commons has officially risen for its summer break, with Members of Parliament voting unanimously to pass a crucial spending bill and other legislative items before departing. The decision to adjourn for the summer comes after a productive spring session that saw the passage of several significant bills, including legislation related to lawful access and the government's spring economic update.

The final day of sitting saw MPs push through Bill C-30, which implements elements of the government's spring economic update. Additionally, the House passed Bill C-27, formalizing self-governance for the Sahtu Dene and Métis in the Northwest Territories. A Senate amendment to Bill C-11, which transfers jurisdiction for investigating sexual offences within the Canadian Armed Forces from the military to the civilian justice system, was also adopted. Bill S-227, designating April as Arab Heritage Month, received unanimous consent.

The spring sitting concluded with Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal government having secured a majority, a shift from the minority status it held at the session's start. Government House leader Steven MacKinnon highlighted the legislative achievements of the sitting, emphasizing that "every day matters in this place, and a legislative achievement matters." MPs are scheduled to return to Ottawa on September 21st.

Notable legislative actions included the passage of the government's lawful access bill, which aims to expedite law enforcement's access to digital information. The House also approved a trio of justice bills focusing on bail reform, new hate crime offenses, and the criminalization of AI-generated sexual deepfakes. Despite the productive end, the sitting was marked by Conservative criticism regarding Prime Minister Carney's frequent absences from Question Period, with the Conservatives noting his 100th absence. Prime Minister Carney was in Vancouver on the final day of sitting to attend an event with B. C. Premier David Eby and a FIFA World Cup match.
