The Toronto Maple Leafs have locked up defenceman Troy Stecher, announcing a two-year contract extension on Monday, June 29, 2026. This move ensures a consistent presence on the blue line for the upcoming seasons. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed, but reports suggest an average annual value of $1.35 million, totaling $2.7 million over the two years.
Stecher, a 32-year-old from Richmond, B. C., joined the Maple Leafs last November after being claimed off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers. He proved to be a reliable contributor during the 2025-26 season, playing in 58 games and recording 14 points (three goals, 11 assists). His steady play and mobility were noted as valuable assets for a Maple Leafs squad that experienced significant changes and missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade.
Having previously played for the Vancouver Canucks, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, Arizona Coyotes, Calgary Flames, and Edmonton Oilers, Stecher brings a wealth of NHL experience to Toronto. He has accumulated 131 points (25 goals, 106 assists) in 624 regular-season games and has also contributed four goals and three assists in 29 career playoff appearances. Stecher has also represented Canada internationally, winning a silver medal at the 2019 IIHF World Hockey Championship and a gold medal in 2021. His continued presence offers stability as the Maple Leafs look to rebuild their defensive corps.
