The 2026 IIHF World Championship in Zurich and Fribourg, Switzerland, will be remembered for Norway's historic bronze medal win, and Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Tinus Luc Koblar was a driving force behind the underdog's success. Norway achieved its first-ever medal at the event, stunning the hockey world by defeating Canada in overtime for third place.
Koblar, who was Toronto's second-round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, led Norway in scoring throughout the tournament, amassing nine points, including six goals. His performance was a significant breakout, especially considering his previous season with Leksands IF in the Swedish Hockey League, where he recorded 14 points in 47 games. "We had a good preparation," Koblar told TSN. "Our group got tight and we built a lot of chemistry together. Everyone bought in on their jobs. I think everyone did the things that we needed to do to be able to beat the best teams."
The bronze medal game saw Norway edge out Canada in a thrilling overtime victory, with Noah Steen scoring the decisive goal. Koblar reflected on the team's unexpected journey: "Before the tournament, I don't think anyone was thinking about being able to beat Canada and taking that [bronze medal] home. I was really glad and the whole team was really glad. It was an unreal feeling for both our team and the whole country.” This achievement marks a significant moment for Norwegian hockey, highlighting the growing competitiveness of nations on the international stage. Koblar, who will move to Rögle BK for the upcoming season, has certainly put himself on the map with his stellar World Championship performance.
