The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly in discussions to hire Mats Sundin and John Chayka to lead their hockey operations department. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Leafs are working to finalize a deal that would see Sundin take on a significant role, potentially as Vice President of Hockey Operations, with Chayka as general manager.
The move comes after the Maple Leafs missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade, leading to the firing of general manager Brad Treliving in March. MLSE CEO Keith Pelley has emphasized the need for a data-centric approach moving forward. Chayka, known for his early adoption of analytics in hockey, fits that description. However, his tenure as GM of the Arizona Coyotes ended with controversy, including a suspension from the NHL.
Bringing in Sundin, the Maple Leafs' all-time points leader and former captain, could help restore pride and a winning culture to the organization. Friedman noted that many within MLSE felt the pride in wearing the Leafs jersey had diminished. Sundin's experience includes a consulting role with Sweden at the 2013 World Championship and 2016 World Cup of Hockey. If hired, it is expected he would have an active role in shaping the team's future.
It remains to be seen whether the Leafs can close the deal with Sundin and Chayka. Longtime Dallas Stars assistant general manager Scott White is also reportedly still in the running for the GM position. The potential hiring of Sundin and Chayka represents a significant shift for the Maple Leafs as they look to rebuild and return to contention.
