Canada's steel industry is set to receive a significant boost with the launch of a new $100 million rebate program designed to strengthen interprovincial trade and support domestic producers. Announced by Minister of Transport Steven MacKinnon, the Commodities Sectoral Support Program will provide a 50 per cent rebate on eligible rail and marine transportation costs for Canadian steel products moving between provinces and territories.
The initiative aims to encourage Canadian manufacturers to utilize domestically sourced steel by making it more cost-effective to transport materials within the country. This move is particularly timely as Canadian industries face challenges from global trade dynamics and existing tariffs. Companies can apply for the rebates starting today, with the program running for up to one year or until the allocated funding is fully disbursed.
Minister MacKinnon emphasized that the program is a strategic investment in Canada's economic resilience. "Canadians want to buy Canadian products. Canadian businesses want to use more Canadian materials,” MacKinnon stated. “And our government wants to support that.” Products must be of Canadian origin and destined for within Canada to qualify for the rebate. This program is part of a broader government strategy to reinforce Canadian supply chains and foster a more self-reliant economy.
The federal government also indicated that similar support programs may be considered for other Canadian sectors, such as the forest industry, which has also been impacted by trade conditions. This initiative underscores the government's commitment to fostering growth and competitiveness for Canadian businesses on the national stage, ensuring that Canadian steel contributes to Canadian projects.
