Calgary Flames forward Connor Zary was forced to leave Friday night's game against the Florida Panthers after a controversial hit by Panthers forward A. J. Greer. The incident occurred late in the third period with the Flames leading 2-1. Greer was initially called for hooking Zary, but as Zary pursued the puck near the boards, Greer shoved him from behind, sending him crashing head-first into the boards.
Zary remained down on the ice for several minutes, clutching his upper-back and neck area, before being helped off the ice by the team trainer. Greer was assessed a five-minute major penalty for interference and a game misconduct. Flames coach Ryan Huska didn't mince words when describing the hit. "Terrible hit. It was awful," Huska told reporters after the game. He did not provide an update on Zary's condition.
The Flames capitalized on the extended power play, scoring twice to extend their lead and ultimately win the game 4-1. However, the victory was tempered by concerns over Zary's health and the nature of the hit. The team will be back in action at home on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. It remains to be seen if Greer will face further disciplinary action from the league.
The Flames and their fans will be anxiously awaiting an update on Zary's condition in the coming days. The Saskatoon native has 11 goals and 13 assists in 68 games this season. His absence would be a significant blow to the Flames' forward lineup.
