Edmonton residents are seeing a return to normalcy as several major roadways, including Groat Road, Connors Road, and 127 Street, have reopened as of Sunday morning. These routes, along with Yellowhead Trail, were temporarily closed due to extensive flooding and debris following a powerful thunderstorm that struck the city on Saturday evening.
The storm, which brought nearly 30 millimetres of rain in just one hour and wind gusts reaching up to 84 km/h, caused considerable disruption. Reports indicated fallen trees, abandoned vehicles, and widespread flash flooding that submerged roads and underpasses, particularly in west Edmonton. The onramp at 178 Street and Whitemud Drive westbound remained closed as crews continued their cleanup efforts.
City crews have been working diligently to clear debris, fallen trees, and abandoned vehicles from roadways. Residents are advised to report any further tree-related issues to 311. The severe weather also impacted power, with several areas experiencing outages as of Sunday morning. This recent storm event contributes to an already record-breaking wet summer for Edmonton, which has seen over 500 mm of rain between June 1 and July 26.
