Doug Armstrong has stepped down as the general manager of Canada's men's hockey team, according to sources at Sportsnet. Armstrong, who assumed the position in 2024, leaves after leading the team to a gold medal at the 4 Nations Face-Off and a silver medal at the Winter Olympics.
Armstrong's departure also coincides with his planned exit from his role as general manager of the St. Louis Blues following the current season. Alexander Steen is slated to take over that position, marking the end of Armstrong's long tenure with the Blues, where he also holds the title of President of Hockey Operations. Armstrong's career includes winning the Stanley Cup as an assistant general manager with the Dallas Stars in 1999.
Hockey Canada faces further uncertainty as Gina Kingsbury, general manager, and head coach Troy Ryan of the women's program have yet to confirm their return after securing a silver medal in Italy. Armstrong was also the GM for Team Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Armstrong's earlier experience with Hockey Canada includes serving as Executive Director for Team Canada at the 2024 and 2025 World Championships, the 2025 NHL Four Nations Cup. His departure marks a significant change for Hockey Canada as they look to fill key leadership positions in both their men's and women's programs.
