A prominent Conservative MP has raised serious concerns about the management and financial stewardship of Canada Health Infoway, calling for greater accountability. Dan Mazier, the Conservative Shadow Minister for Health, stated that the Liberal government has been compelled to place a hold on $50 million in funding for Canada Health Infoway due to alleged mismanagement. This action follows the significant failure of the PrescribeIT program, which reportedly cost taxpayers over $300 million.
Mazier highlighted that PrescribeIT saw minimal adoption, with less than five percent of prescriptions utilizing the program before its eventual shutdown. He criticized the government for a perceived lack of oversight, stating that despite significant taxpayer investment, Canada Health Infoway failed to deliver on its objectives. The Conservatives are demanding transparency regarding how these public funds were allocated and why the organization continued to receive funding despite evident underperformance.
Further complicating the situation, Canada Health Infoway has reportedly refused to provide documents related to PrescribeIT to a health committee, despite a formal order. Mazier questioned the organization's trustworthiness with public funds and Canada's health data infrastructure when it is unable to comply with such requests. The Conservative party has pledged to continue pressing for the full truth about the PrescribeIT failure and to hold those responsible accountable for the expenditure of public money.
Canada Health Infoway, established in 2000 with federal government funding, has a mandate to accelerate the implementation of electronic health records and digital health solutions across the country. While it has invested heavily in various digital health initiatives, the PrescribeIT issue has cast a shadow over its recent performance and financial accountability.
